Then and Now: 40 Years of Workforce Trends

A Reflection on the Changes in Employment

This year marks a major milestone for us—40 years of connecting good people with great jobs. As we celebrate, we’re reflecting on how much the workforce has changed since we first opened our doors in 1985. From the way we apply for jobs to what employees expect from employers, the staffing industry has undergone a dramatic transformation.

Let’s take a look at how far we’ve come:

Job Searching: Paper to Digital
Then (1985):

Job seekers searched the newspaper classifieds, walked into businesses to drop off resumes, or relied on word-of-mouth to find work.
Now (2025):
Online job boards, mobile apps, social media, and even AI-powered resume tools have made job hunting faster and more competitive than ever. At NW Staffing Resources, we blend personal service with technology to make the process smooth for both candidates and clients.

Resumes & Interviews: One Size to Custom Fit

Then:
Resumes were typed, printed, and mailed—or hand-delivered. Interviews were mostly face-to-face, and the focus was on hard skills and past job titles.
Now:
Resumes are digital and often tailored for specific roles using keywords. Interviews can happen over Zoom, and employers look beyond the resume to assess soft skills, adaptability, and cultural fit.

The Workforce: Clock In to Log On

Then:
Most employees worked 9 to 5 in a single office or job site. Temporary work was often viewed as short-term or stopgap employment.
Now:
Hybrid work, remote jobs, and flexible scheduling are now standard. Temporary work is a respected path to full-time employment, career growth, or work-life balance—especially during busy seasons like summer.

Expectations: Paycheck to Purpose

Then:
A steady paycheck and job security were top priorities.
Now:
While pay still matters, today’s workers also value purpose, growth opportunities, work culture, and flexibility. Employers who offer this have the best chance of attracting and keeping top talent.

What Hasn’t Changed?
At the core of it all, people still want meaningful work, and businesses still need great employees. That’s where we come in—just like we have for the past 40 years.
Whether you’re hiring for summer or looking for your next opportunity, we’re here to help make the connection.
