What Employees Look for in Management

Did you know that January is one of the most common months for people to look for a new job?

It’s a month full of resolutions, goals (see our post on goals here!) and working towards a better you. Additionally, January is a new year and a new budget, and many companies are likely to want to make a new hire during this month as well. Most people spend the majority of their waking hours with their boss and coworkers so finding the right fit is important. While there are a lot of “nice to haves” that employees want in their management, these are the overwhelming top four that employees look for, especially when they are starting a new job and likewise forming a new relationship with their management.

Honesty/ Trust

Honesty and Trust seem to go hand in hand, right? Employees seek honest managers to guide them in their role in the company as well as help shape their career. Without honesty, it’s incredibly hard to trust their position and integrity. Along with honesty, it’s worth it to note that clear expectations help shape an employee’s role within their team and the company.

Respect

Nothing is worse than being hired for a new job and then being disrespected by the person who hired you for that job. What does respect look like? In simple terms: treating others as you want to be treated. Employees look for a manager who respects their skills, abilities and opinions. Likewise, when you are in a new position it speaks volumes to respect your manager.

Responsiveness

An absent manager is difficult to work with, particularly when you are learning the ropes of a new position. Not only are new employees juggling understanding the aspects and expectations of their new position, but they are likely navigating the culture of their new team and/or office environment. Being a manager that is prompt in responding to questions and shaping the culture for your new employee will go a long way.
